25th to 28th June 2008, Strasbourg

Event: Web 2.0 and beyond: applying social and collaborative tools to business problems
5th - 6th March 2008 in London
The web today is no longer static and largely advertorial, but dynamic, interactive and more useful. Sharing ideas and information in a light, flexible framework enables dynamic collaboration between individuals and teams, and it is this "usefulness" to the business that this conference explores. Social tools are changing the way we do business: Kevin Roberts, worldwide CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi, recently claimed that tomorrow’s innovators will be “creative connectors”. FaceBook is no longer just for individuals outside of work, but is arguably becoming the site of choice for making inter- and intra-organisational connections; major law firms encourage their employees to blog; wikis are often far more powerful and useful than standard resources and have replaced intranets in many instances as invaluable sources of information and communication throughout the enterprise. RSS Feeds, Instant Messaging, tools for tagging, photo-sharing and social sites make communications easier and more effective and all can deliver greater involvement and transparency. Originators become real, human and influential, and for the new generation of techno-savvy professionals, the opportunities and applications are unbounded. Building the emotional intelligence of groups
VU Druskat, SB Wolff
The management world knows by now that to be effective in the workplace, an individual needs high emotional intelligence. What isn't so well understood is that teams need it, too. Citing such companies as IDEO, Hewlett-Packard, and the Hay Group, the authors show that high emotional intelligence is at the heart of effective teams.

Although a certain degree of analytical and technical skill is a minimum requirement for success, studies indicate that emotional intelligence may be the key attribute that distinguishes outstanding performers from those who are merely adequate.

What leaders really do
J Kotter
Harvard Business Review Classic
Leadership is different from management, but not for the reasons most people think. Leadership isn't mystical and mysterious. It has nothing to do with having charisma or other special personality traits. Nor is leadership necessarily better than management or a replacement for it. Rather, leadership and management are two distinctive and complementary systems of action, argues John Kotter in this article, first published in 1990.

Management

Building your company’s vision
JC Collins, JI Porras
Companies that enjoy enduring success have a core purpose and core values that remain fixed while their strategies and practices endlessly adapt to a changing world. The rare ability to balance continuity and change - requiring a consciously practiced discipline - is closely linked to the ability to develop a vision.

Knowledge Improvement

Programmes to Attain Healthy Weights for Overweight/Obese Children and Young People
The Social Science Research Unit is conducting a mapping exercise on behalf of the Cross Governmental Obesity Unit, based in the Department of Health, to identify and describe UK-based programmes targeted at overweight or obese children and young people. They want to get a full and comprehensive picture of activity throughout the UK. One of the key issues they are interested in is what evidence was used to inform the development of each programme. If you know about or are involved with any such programmes, please complete this short survey, which will take just a few minutes. Please click on the link below to start the survey. The survey asks about any programmes you know about (past and current), and also about any mapping/scoping exercises you are aware of (similar to this one). They would also be grateful to receive any documents or web-links about the programmes. The products of this project will include a database containing details obesity reduction programmes targeting children and young people.
